COHORT ENTRY FOR NEW ENTRANTS

Children starting primary school for the first time are called “new entrants”. Matakana School uses the cohort entry system to determine when new entrants start school.

COHORT ENTRY INFORMATION

ENROLMENT PROCEDURE

We are looking forward to welcoming your child and family into the Matakana School Community.

Step 1: Complete an Expression of Interest form

Families are encouraged to complete an Expression of Interest for Enrolment application well in advance of the entry point, ideally once your child turns four years old. This helps the school with forward planning for staffing and resourcing.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM In Zone

Once your application is received, you will receive written acknowledgement, and your child will be included on the appropriate pre-enrolment list.

Step 2: Attend a school tour

We hold School Tours once a term for parents/caregivers of future students. This is an ideal time to chat to our Deputy Principal and to view the school in action. You will have the opportunity to view our classrooms and facilities and be introduced to the Vision we have for the students at our school. We recommend you register for a tour in the term prior to your child starting school.

If you would like to attend one of the School Tours, please register here

Step 3:  Complete the Enrolment Documents and organise Uniform and Stationery items

To do list for the term before your child is due to start:

- Complete and return the Enrolment Documents (issued in week 5 of the term preceding your child's starting term).

- Ensure you bring proof of your home zone address and the Statutory Declaration (witnessed by a JP or Solicitor) if you are applying for an in zone place (we would request the latest utility bill, Sale & Purchase or Tenancy Agreement

- Provide the school with your child's ID ( NZ birth certificate, NZ passport and/or appropriate visa) and your child’s immunisation certificate.

- Organise your child's stationery items (Transfers, please check stationery requirements with the office).

- Organise your child's uniform.

The ladies in the office will be happy to help you with these.

Step 4: Be ready for your child's Class Visit (for new entrants only)

Your child will be invited to join the class they are going into, for part of a school day, in the week prior to them starting.

This visit will allow your child to spend time with their new teacher and their fellow classmates. It will also help them to become familiar with the school and the school routines. (A letter containing the date and time for the Class Visit will be included in the Enrolment Documents).

Class Visit: 8:30 am - 12.25 am

A parent or support person is most welcome to stay in the classroom briefly until the child settles. Once the children have settled into class the Acting Deputy Principal, Wendy Chittenden will have a chat with new parents in the staffroom.

As this visit concludes at the start of lunchtime, please provide a small healthy morning tea for your child.

For children starting in Term 1, the school holds an Open Morning in late January, where you can meet your child’s teacher and visit their classroom.

Step 5: Arrive on the Big Day

Please be at school by 8.30am on your child's first day so you have time to familiarise yourselves with the classroom and their teacher.
